Ideas for holidays, weekends and trips in Carcassonne and its surroundings

Carcassonne is a famous medieval destination, and the imposing La Cite is the best surviving area to illustrate the city’s history. Just 6km from the hotel, La Cite is surrounded by walls, there are 52 stone towers; it is a magnificent sight. Amongst the attractions inside La Cite is the Chateau Comtal, which dates back to the 12th century and is a beautiful piece of architecture, as well as the Basilica of Saint Nazaire, another breathtaking medieval sight. The St. Vincent Church is also certainly worth a visit. Shopaholics should head to the Esprit de Sel, famous for its huge selection of items and souvenirs, or to the covered market in the centre of the city. To get a sense of the region, why not take a boat trip up the Canal du Midi, with a range of different operators offering such a service; it is a great idea for families with children. Alternatively, there is a fantastic bird park just next to La Cite, and its impressive size means there are more than 300 types of birds to spot. Or if you fancy a day of theme park rides, the Drole de Jungle Park is less than an hour’s drive from the hotel and a major family attraction in southwest France. If you fancy some live sport, the USC are a formidable force in the second division of French rugby union, and they play just 6.5km north of the hotel. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to book your stay at the Premiere Classe Carcassonne today for an enjoyable time in the region.
